Overview of agenda & Announcements (Email, book/movie group sign up, policy action items)    

 

1:15-1:45 Presentation by Prof. Stephanie Jirard:

Prof. Jirard will be speaking with us about criminal justice practices that lead to wrongful convictions and how to hold prosecutors accountable for the awesome power they wield. The three subtopics are: cellmate confessions, withholding exculpatory evidence, and death-qualification of capital juries.

 

1:45-2:15 Coffee, Calendar, and Policy & Advocacy Actions:

Mingle, enjoy coffee, add any important upcoming events to the group calendar, write a postcard, or complete a Policy & Advocacy action item.

 

2:15-3:00 Committee Sessions:

For those who are interested, Committees will be checking in and working in their subcommittees as appropriate. We have a little less committee time this week than usual.
  • Elections & Voting: Meeting in Main Space
    • Focus Areas: New candidate support/education, Gerrymandering,Get out the vote, local politics
  • Policy & Advocacy: Meeting in Coffee Area
    • Subcommittees: Human Rights, Economic Justice, Executive Administration, Healthcare & Education, Environment, Racial Justice
  • Social Justice Education: Meeting Downstairs
    • Focus Areas: Educational opportunities and social events for CVR members to connect and learn about responsibly becoming involved in Social Justice work.
  • Events: Meeting Downstairs
    • Focus Areas: External, nonpartisan educational events (Fake News, Civic Literacy, etc.), Fundraising for CVR
  • Membership & Communications: Meeting in Main Space
    • Focus Areas: Best practices for CVR communications, Meeting set up/staffing, CVR Branding

On the shooting of Congressman Scalise

So much happened in these past two weeks since we’ve seen you last, but I want to take a moment to talk about the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and 4 others at the republican congressional team’s baseball practice in Alexandria, VA on Wednesday morning. I think I speak for everyone in this room and for Cumberland Valley Rising when I say that we condemn this violent and cowardly attack, and that our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during their long road to recovery, both physical and emotional. Sadly, this episode is one in a long line of violent attacks born out of the increasing political and cultural polarization over the past several years.
