It’s not too late to run for office!

Specifically, for the office of the official poll workers for each and every precinct in the county. Each precinct has one Judge of Elections and two Inspectors of Elections (one Democrat and one Republican). This is a 4 year term which runs from 2018-2022. You’d be signing on, basically, to a three-day per year job, which is a paid position. You’d be at the polling station from before it opens until after it closes on both primary and general election days each year, plus a day of training on how the machine works and your responsibilities at the Bureau of Elections at some point each year.

These are extremely important positions given the increasing challenges and restrictions on voting rights, which are only going to get worse over the next 4 years. If elected you will be an official poll worker during the next presidential election. We need you!

Attached please find a brief job description, as well as list of every precinct and ward in the county listing candidates already on the ballot. As you can see, far, far too many of them are blank.

To get on the ballot as a Write-In candidate, you need as many votes as that office required signatures for the petition. So for Inspector of Elections, you just need 5 write-in votes, and for Judge of Elections, you need 10. You may vote for yourself. If you do not know 4 or 9 additional people in your precinct you can recruit in advance, print a few dozen index cards with the exact name on your voter registration card, and standing *outside* the polling station for a few hours on primary day on Tuesday, ask any voters entering who are registered in your party if they will write you in, and hand them your card. Specific instructions follow, or email cvrising.elections@gmail.com with questions.

On the shooting of Congressman Scalise

So much happened in these past two weeks since we’ve seen you last, but I want to take a moment to talk about the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and 4 others at the republican congressional team’s baseball practice in Alexandria, VA on Wednesday morning. I think I speak for everyone in this room and for Cumberland Valley Rising when I say that we condemn this violent and cowardly attack, and that our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during their long road to recovery, both physical and emotional. Sadly, this episode is one in a long line of violent attacks born out of the increasing political and cultural polarization over the past several years. It is not an isolated incident—this is NOTHING NEW. We condemn this attack. Just as we condemned the stabbing of three brave men in Portland a few weeks ago, who intervened on behalf of two young Muslim women who were being attacked by an Islamophobe. This attack resulted in the death o...

Call for Action on Investigation of Russian Interference in our Election

Russian interference in our election is a serious threat to our democracy.  There must be a thorough and legitimate investigation of that interference, including possible collusion between the Russian government and members of the Trump campaign.  On May 17 the Deputy Attorney General appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a Special Counsel to investigate this matter.  This is a good first step which we applaud.  However, by itself, this Special Counsel is not sufficient to adequately address the issues involved.  First, the Special Counsel’s investigation will be done very much in secret and only addresses prosecutable crimes committed by Americans.  It will not address Russian actions, nor our future responses to such actions.  Secondly, the Special Counsel is subject to being fired by President Trump.  Third, the report will not be made public. In...
